Mirage
Mirage is a piece born out of unpredictability and transformation—a reflection of both the ice and my journey as an artist. This work, created on a drifting ice flow in the Baltic Sea, began as an experiment but quickly turned into one of my most personally significant pieces. Midway through painting a portrait on the ice, the surface suddenly cracked beneath me, and I found myself balancing between two shifting ice sheets. The image fractured along with the ice, but it somehow held together—an echo of the resilience in fragility.
The theme of Mirage speaks to the illusions we create around success and failure. At first, I thought the piece was lost, but as I worked to adapt, I saw something even more powerful emerge—a testament to beauty found in imperfection. Like Kintsugi, the Japanese art of mending cracks with gold, Mirage holds a quiet strength in its fractured state, symbolizing our own brokenness and the beauty we can find within it.
This piece, captured in stunning detail, is one of the works that pushed me to embrace vulnerability in my art. With every shift and crack in the ice, I was reminded of the impermanence of nature—and of life itself. The result is a piece that is as much about letting go as it is about holding on, inviting the viewer to find peace in life’s imperfections.
