Emergence
Emerging from the depths—whether it’s from water or ice—is a sacred moment. It’s the first breath after being submerged, the stillness between two worlds. Emergence captures this powerful moment, a figure rising from the icy expanse, taking that first breath of life. It’s about renewal, the quiet peace that comes with breaking the surface, and the reminder that even in the coldest places, there’s always room for rebirth.
This piece began as an idea years ago during a photo shoot with my wife, where she was submerged in water, her face was the only part breaking through. That fleeting moment stuck with me, and when I found the perfect location—a rock islet on the frozen Baltic Sea—I knew it was time to bring that vision to life. The landscape felt like it had been waiting for this moment.
Emergence was different from my usual ice pieces. It took two days to complete, as I needed time to capture the details, to let the figure truly feel like she was part of the ice, yet still breaking through it. The weather cooperated, allowing me to finish the shadows and deepen the contrasts, making sure the piece felt like it was coming to life in the stillness of the frozen sea.
This work isn’t just about the moment of emergence, but about the peace that comes after. It’s a reflection on the power of renewal, the strength in breaking through, and the beauty found in the quiet, even in the most extreme conditions.
