Apollo
There’s something profound about the edge—the place where ice meets water, where solid ground begins to slip away, and things start to break apart. It’s in this delicate space that I created Apollo, a figure born from both strength and fragility. The ice, with its snow-covered striations, mirrored the marble of ancient sculptures, making the landscape itself feel like a canvas of timeless beauty, yet fleeting in nature. As I worked on the edge of the ice, parts of the portrait began to break off, drifting into the water, as if the figure was dissolving before my eyes.
Apollo is not only a tribute to the past; it’s a meditation on what remains when everything else fades away. Even in the cracks, the melting, and the shifting ice, there’s a beauty that endures.
Creating this piece wasn’t without its challenges—the ice was melting fast, pulling the charcoal deeper into its surface, and parts of the figure were literally fracturing off. Yet, in this imperfection, the piece felt more powerful. As I watched the ice melt, I realized it wasn’t about creating something permanent. It was about embracing the fragility of the moment and letting the landscape shape the work.
Apollo is a symbol of both the fleeting nature of life and the enduring beauty found in imperfection. This print captures the raw, natural moment of creation, where the ice and the landscape are as much a part of the piece as the figure itself.
