"Renewal" Project

RENEWAL” is the newest project from internationally acclaimed land-artist David Popa.

It is about new beginnings—and the quiet work of healing. Three ephemeral earth frescoes made with only chalk, charcoal, and water, where fracture isn’t failure, but the place light gets in.

RENEWAL is an ephemeral trilogy created on the ice of Alberta, Canada, at Abraham Lake and within glacial canyons where turquoise water cuts through frozen stone. Using only chalk, charcoal and earth pigments, I painted directly onto the ice and shoreline edges, letting wind, current, and shifting temperature shape the final form. These portraits were born in a place that refuses permanence: methane bubbles suspended beneath the surface like frozen breath, fractures running through the ice like scars, and rivers that reclaim what’s placed beside them. One figure emerges into a new beginning, one releases the past into glacial-blue flow, and one holds love in the cracks—brokenness traced with the possibility of healing. Each work was made within a narrow weather window—vulnerable to wind, thaw, and moving water—then transformed or erased as the lake changed overnight, reminding me that renewal is never clean, and that beauty can be found in brokenness.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

David Popa is a contemporary artist known for creating monumental, ephemeral frescoes directly onto the Earth. Working primarily with natural pigments like chalk, charcoal, and minerals, Popa crafts hauntingly powerful portraits across glaciers, lava fields, islands, and shorelines—works that are ultimately reclaimed by nature.

Born to a family of artists in New York City and now based in Finland, Popa’s creative journey blends classical training with raw intuition. His work lives at the intersection of art, nature, and the sacred. Each piece is not only a visual creation but a personal pilgrimage: a meditation on time, decay, identity, and the unseen.

In recent years, Popa’s large-scale land works have gained international recognition, featured by BBC, CNN, Colossal, and more. He has collaborated with large brands such as Apple and Adidas along with working on some of the largest public art projects in the world. He documents his process through cinematic short films that give viewers access to both the physical creation and the spiritual intention behind the work.

David invites his audience to slow down, look closer, and contemplate the transient beauty of being alive.

COLLECTORS ARE RAVING ★★★★★

The last release in November 2025 exceeded expectations and prints nearly all sold out. The feedback was nearly all five-star. Every print is now studio-made, hand-signed, fingerprinted, and crafted on archival cotton paper directly from the hands of the artist, David Popa.
